Two University of Bedfordshire students on the BA (Hons) Media Production course have been nominated for a national award for their final year projects.
Oh Syria, My Syria and Casa Din Copac have been shortlisted in the Royal Television Society’s (RTS) Student awards London Region for Best Documentary and Best Fiction categories respectively.
Shot on location in Romania, Casa Din Copac is the story of a father trying to bond with his daughter by building a tree house together. Florin Brinza directed the fictional piece alongside his fellow students.
Talking about the experience he said: “I received support from a number of different tutors, some of which were not even allocated to my project.
“Because of that, I always made sure I was always in contact with them to get all the feedback I could. Looking back on the whole process, the story would not have reached its potential had it not been for the help of the university staff,” he added.
Directed by Ismael Ahmed and filmed by final year students, Oh Syria, My Syria follows the lives of people within the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. “It exhibits their poignant past, troublesome present and future aspirations after fleeing a war torn Syria”, said Ismael.
He continued: “I wanted to explore the ramifications of war and specifically its harrowing implications on the Syrian population. I eventually gained access to the camp and employed an interactive and observational filmmaking strategy.
“I thank the University of Bedfordshire for accepting my application three years ago when I was in a tight spot and Dave Green, with the rest of my lecturers who helped mould me into a filmmaker and for that I am truly grateful.”
Dave Green, course leader for BA (Hons) Media Production said: “Getting nominated for such a prestigious award is an outstanding achievement. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing their projects grow from the initial writing stages, through to the final editing stages and beyond.
“I wish them all the best, not only with the awards but with their blossoming careers”.
